i bought a meth house

misplaced family started this conversation

My wife and I unknowingly purchaced a home that was previously a meth lab. Now our home has been close to entry by th Utah board of health and we must pay for the clean up of this house . This is our only place of residence and currently having to stay with relatives. We struggled to come up with money for the down payment and now have no money to afford the cleanup of this house so we can move back to our home. We found out about the condition of our home about 2 weeks after we closed on the house and now nobody seems to want to help. We need help . We have been told all our belongings will need to be destroyed and properly disposed of due to contamination. We dont have much but we also dont have money to replaced everything in our home. The worst part is our hearing impared daughter doesnt understand she also has to give up all her personal belongings. We need help to pay for cleanup of our contaminated home and replacement of belongings. Its only everything we have that we have to loose and not our doings that caused this situation. We only were trying to have a decent safe home to live in and the only answers we seem to get is YOU BOUGHT IT NOW ITS YOUR PROBLEM . Please let us know if there is anything you can do to help or assist us .. Thank You   Steve Long

You don't need to pay for anything!

Contact a lawyer because when you bought your house the seller should have disclosed the truth in housing disclosure.

You can void the contract for your purchase of the house and the responsible parties to clean up the house. Unfortunately, everything in the house has to be gutted out because of the contaminates.

We too are in the same situation, except we bought our house 5 years ago, and after 3 children ages 3, 2, and 1 began having major respiratory problems, no one that it was important to tell us till then. My 2 year old is on the max dose of steroids a child her age and size can possibly be on just to keep her airways open. But we don't know what to do. We have already used up all the available equity in the home when we first bought it to remodel the house. And even though we've painted, replaced light fixtures, flooring etc, our home still has high levels of meth. If anyone has any advice that would help my family please e-mail me at bestcandlesaround@yahoo.com. We don't know what to do or where to turn for help. Thank you and we will keep your family in our prayers. God Bless!

My son and his family were also victims of someone who decided to use their home as a meth lab, before they bought it. No one ever told them about the home's history. You can read his story on the website I started to help victims tell their story - www.methlabhomes.com

If you have been a victim of a meth lab and you would like to share your story on my website, please contact me. My contact information is listed on my website.

By sharing victim's stories on my site, I know that we can get changes implemented in Washington.  But, they have to hear how the problem is making families suffer not only financial losses, but emotional and health losses too!

Thank you for taking the time to write back. What we are faced with is unimaginable and I see little for us to do. I believe we will have to walk away from this house of death before anything happens to us. My credit will suffer from foreclosure for about 4 years but I will still be breathing and so will my wife and hopefully my one remaining dog. If you hear anything with better news let me know. Meth is death that is a message everyone should be passing on!

God Bless you and your family,

Wayne

I wish I had good news for you but I never found any. Although at least here in the state of Utah there was a new bill that passed to help someone in your shoes that alows some aid in the cost of clean up. I will caution you though if city, state or federal agencies find that your house was tested and failed as the owner of the house YOU will be responsible for the cost of clean up . If the levels are as bad as they were in my home It will be very costly. I had to pay about 6 thousand for the cost of the clean up and what was left of the house was literaly a shell. No carpet most wall down to studs all cabinetry left plus everything i owned inside the house that was not metal. And even that because of the chemicals used had to be thourouly cleaned afterwards to stop it from coroading .  My house was originally appraised at 110 thousand when i bought it. After the clean up it appraised at 70 thousand. I ended up doing a short sale on my house and then getting hit with a 10-99 at the end of the year for 34 thousand on my taxas. I was able to claim insolvency on that thanks to h&r block rep that was very helpful. I like i said lost most everything i owned and will have to deal with the short sale my credit will suffer at least 3 years. I will look into the blill that past here and try to let you know what i can to help.. So sorry for you and your family I hope you come out of it better that I did.

I am so sorry for you. After two of my dogs have died of Cancer we started asking some questions to our nieghbors and we have also discovered that our home was used as a meth lab. I am afraid to to call the health dept. we also do not have any money to fix the problem. What do you do in this situation? Do you stop paying for the home and lose all good credit? Is there nobody that can be held liable? We need help too.....I don't know what to do.

I guess sometimes you have to cut and run and let the bank figure it out.

I just wish there was some other way.

Hi, Well, it seems that the situation is bad. Have you tried obtaining any grants or loans? Or at least help from the state/federal government for temporary housing? Here I have posted links for you - I do not know if your situation can be qualified as a result of a disaster but in any case just have a look - there might be a program or grant, or loan, or more probably some type of in-kind assistance that you qualify for and that could be at least a partial solution to your troubles.
